The home at 82 Brookwood Lane in New Canaan, Conn. brings all of the splendor one would expect from a property listed for $13.9 million.
But perhaps more intriguing are the people that, until recently, called the place home: None other than Paul Simon and his wife, Edie Brickell.
“I think a lot of people didn’t necessarily realize he was tucked away in this part of the world,” listing agent Leslie Razook of William Pitt Sotheby’s International Realty said in an interview with Boston.com.
In fact, Simon even had his own recording studio in a cottage within the property’s nearly 32-acre grounds.
“It’s a wonderful cottage that has always existed on the property and he did turn it into his recording studio,” Razook said. “You can see from the pictures, his instruments are all there.”
Simon has put the studio to use over the years — he’s worked on his last four albums there, according to Razook.
“And no matter how prepared you are for it, it’s kind of awesome walking in the door,” she said. “That music has pervaded all of our lives for so long and it’s very impactful to see it, to see this place where he actually writes and records.”
The home itself was built in 1938 and includes six bedrooms, seven bathrooms plus three half baths for a total of 16 rooms. It’s a “white-washed Georgian designed by Harold Reeve Sleeper,” according to the listing.
Razook called the home “lived in and intimate.”
“And that’s such a special thing,” she said. “Not every house has a real personality, but this one does.”
Some of the notable features of the home are a curved entry and its large windows throughout. There’s a “giant” sunroom off the living room “that overlooks the pool and the pond and the property,” according to Razook.
“The fireplaces are all original,” she said. “They’ve taken some of the beautiful elements that were there and added to those.”
Outside, the grounds include the pond, plus a waterfall and a brook, according to Razook.
“It really feels like a park,” she said, noting that it’s one that’s matured over the years. “When you see this property come into bloom, which he tried to describe to us, it’s so breathtaking and spectacular.”
Even though the property features open land and many trees, it’s actually close to downtown New Canaan and only about an hour from New York City, according to Razook.
“People are stunned when they realize that it’s there,” she said. “It’s so close to everything.”
