In a North Shore town filled with centuries-old Colonials, this mid-century modern home stands apart. Situated on 2.01 acres in Topsfield, the three-bedroom, two-bathroom abode at 76 Rowley Bridge Road flaunts clean lines and angles — and a wealth of well-preserved details.

Local architect Oscar Padjen built the house in 1966 for his family. Inspired by the work of luminaries like Frank Lloyd Wright and Richard Neutra, he designed his own home to incorporate illusions of length. Roof overhangs and an attached deck continue the house’s horizontal lines, while a long garden wall connects the home to the two-car garage.

All 2,060 square feet of living space unfold on a single level. A “sunken” living room, or conversation pit, features benches that double as storage space, while the three bedrooms offer built-in desk areas and closets. Each room was designed to connect the indoors with the outdoors — floor-to-ceiling windows, sliding glass doors, and an open-concept floor plan draw the surrounding woodland inside. As a bonus for nature lovers, a canoe launch along the Ipswich River is within walking distance.

The home is also an early example of passive solar design, aligned on its lot to face north and south. The low-slung, 5-foot roof overhangs offer shade in the summertime, but let in sunlight to warm the interior in the winter. At the vernal and autumnal equinoxes, the setting sun casts a ray of light down the main hallway of the house, which Padjen’s daughter Elizabeth calls “a bit like living in Stonehenge.”

Mary Rossi of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage has listed the property for $499,900.
