This 20-room Sudbury estate seems to have it all — even its own car wash.
The dormered Colonial sits up against more than 50 acres of conservation land. It was built by David Kane in 1989 and significantly renovated in 2009. Listing agent Leo Young said the current owners invested more than $10 million in the home.
“These owners invested into the house like this was their forever house,” he said. “They held nothing back.”
The house at 41 Plympton Road features an ornate entryway, a tiger-maple living room with a rotunda, a family room with arched beams and a stone fireplace, a paneled library, and a copper-ceilinged wine cellar that holds more than 1,000 bottles. The whole home is protected by security monitoring and connected by an elevator.
Owner Jack Cumming is the former chairman and CEO of Hologic. Cumming called the property a getaway from the city and reminisced about how nice it was to come home to after work. “In what is a large house by square footage, I think you get a really cozy feeling, an intimacy,” he said.
More than anything, though, the house felt safe and private, Cumming said. “In today’s absolutely berserk, crazy, chaotic, unsafe world, it’s nice to be able to go to a place that you do feel comfortable, and that’s what it gave us. I think someone new will get that same feeling.”
The house sits behind a gated, circular drive on more than two beautifully landscaped acres. Cumming said having conservation land next door makes it feel more like 20.
The master suite features two baths and dressing rooms and direct access to the gunite pool, which is right beside a sprawling patio.
The home’s lower level offers a theater, fitness center, game room with a wet bar, and a billiard room. The property also has an in-law or au pair suite with a separate entrance.
In all, the 17,125-square-foot home has six bedrooms, seven full baths, four half baths, and an eight-car garage with a car wash. Cumming said he’s willing to sell it with most of the furniture and decor included, if the buyer is interested.
