If there were a checklist for a classic New England home, this nearly 200-year-old Cape surrounded by stone walls would tick off every item, from the center entry to the single chimney that was once the source of all heat and still rises above a roof sloped to handle a brutal snowstorm.

The home has been expanded since it was first built in 1828, and now registers at 3,000 square feet. The original section still has its wide-plank wood flooring and 12-over-12 windows. The addition was carefully designed to match the original, including the cedar shingle roof.

The primary entry point is a doorway between the original and the addition that opens to a mudroom. Turning left leads to the original section and a dining room with a chandelier and a fireplace. The mantel and the room’s trim are painted a medium blue. The home has four fireplaces in all.

The den, located down a short hallway off the center entryway, features exposed, unpainted beams, built-ins, and a fireplace with a white mantel. French doors lead to a 336-square-foot screen porch with a new cedar ceiling and a hot tub.

A large living room — it’s as wide as the den and dining room combined — sits toward the rear of the home and offers access to the first of two full baths in the house and the kitchen. This bathroom shows its age, but in a stylish way: There’s a claw-foot bathtub, a single porcelain vanity atop a cream-colored cabinet, the wide-planked wood floor, and bead-board wainscot. The addition, which encompasses the kitchen and family room, has a cathedral ceiling with exposed beams and a brick wall for the elaborately detailed wood stove. The kitchen cabinets are pumpkin pine with a clear finish, casting a warm glow. The counters are butcher block, and there is an island with storage. The kitchen has high-end stainless-steel appliances, a ceramic tile floor, and a pot rack that hangs over an old cast-iron stove the owner repurposed as an island. (Sorry, that stove is not part of the sale.) The sink sits below three windows that look out to the backyard, which includes an in-ground gunite pool and a pergola cloaked in wisteria. The owner is a lobsterman who bolstered the stone walls with rocks hauled from the ocean.

The four bedrooms and the other full bath are on the second floor. Three of the bedrooms are carpeted with hardwood underneath. The master is 224 square feet and has a walk-in closet, hardwood flooring, a fireplace, and built-in drawers.

The full bath offers a subway tile backsplash, a double vanity with a composite countertop, a tub/shower combo, a tile floor, and bead-board wainscot.

The lot is 1.4 acres. Across the flat, wide backyard sits a red barn/workshop that’s heated and offers parking for two vehicles.
