Only a handful of Eastern and Central Massachusetts cities saw a drop in rental prices last month, according to a report the Zumper real estate site released June 1.

Salem had the biggest month-over-month drop in May in the median cost for a one-bedroom unit (-3.2 percent), followed by Malden (-2.4) and Revere (-1.1 ). Beverly saw the biggest month-over-month increase (4.8 percent), with Brockton (4.7) and Cambridge (4.1) not far behind.

In a year that ushered in precipitous rent drops in the Commonwealth’s cities, costs were up year over year in five communities — some considered the most affordable for renters: Lawrence (15.1 percent), Salem (13), Lowell (8.5), Worcester (5.5), and Framingham (1.7). The least expensive communities for renters in May were Worcester, Haverhill, and Lowell, in that order. Cambridge, Boston, and Brookline were the most expensive.

The median rent for a one-bedroom unit in Massachusetts was $1,805 in May.

Here’s how several communities stacked up for the cost of renting a one-bedroom apartment and the percentage change month over month and year over year:
